Designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1973, iittala Gaissa glassware has distinctively rocky and knobby bases and thin walls that mirror the lucid qualities of ice. Considered a master of Finnish design, Wirkkala’s themes come from his observations of nature. Natural phenomena such as ice formations or the movements of water serve as inspirations for his work. Getting its moniker from a fell covered perpetually by snow, Gaissa is organic glassware that powerfully illustrates Wirkalla’s mastery and command of blown glass and the powerful force that the arctic serves as his inspiration.
